Lewis Causation is a Special Case of Spohn Causation

چکیده

Lewis ([1973a]) famously defined event c to be causally relevant to event e in world w just in case O c ð Þ and O e ð Þ as well as :O c ð Þ !:O e ð Þ are true in w, where O c ð Þ and O e ð Þ say that c occurs and that e occurs, respectively. For him, this implied that O c ð Þ ! O e ð Þ is true, because he was assuming the underlying logic to be VC, which validates ^ ð Þ ! ð Þ. If one works with the weaker system V, the causal relevance of event c to event e has to be defined as follows:

Deterministic Causation

This paper is the most complete presentation of my views on deterministic causation. It develops the deterministic theory in perfect parallel to my theory of probabilistic causation and thus unites the two aspects. It also argues that the theory presented is superior to all regularity and all counterfactual theories of causation.

Direct and Indirect Causes

Everybody agrees that the distinction between direct and indirect causation is important. And it seems easy to draw, i f an analysis of causation in general is available. The causal influence of one event on another is direct, if it is not mediated by other events in between; otherwise it is indirect. The trouble is with the proviso. Indeed, I contend that the order of analysis must be reversed...

Causation: an Alternative

The paper builds on the basically Humean general idea that A is a cause of B iff A and B both occur, A precedes B, and A raises the metaphysical or epistemic status of B given the obtaining circumstances. It argues that in pursuit of a theory of deterministic causation this ‘status raising’ is best explicated not in regularity or counterfactual terms, but in terms of ranking functions. On this ...

مفهوم علیت در پارادایم‌های پزشکی

In this article, we aim to discuss one of the essential concepts of medicine. In this article, we will evaluate the concept of causation in medicine from a philosophical point of view and through histor...
